FIRST DOMINION PROJECT
‘First Dominion’ is the campaign name of a campaign to secure Dominion Status for Wales.
Wales is not a sovereign state, recognised by the rest of the world as an independent country. Wales is governed by the laws of England, mainly the Government of Wales Act 2006 and the Wales Act 2017. England controls how Wales functions, and does not allow Wales to raise or allocate its own revenue.
England created an empire of Colonies and Dominions. Wales was the First Dominion. Many followed, and included what is now Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India and Ireland. The meaning of ‘Dominion’ changed. Dominion came to describe self-government including the raising and allocating revenue. The exact meaning varied from one Dominion to the next. Dominions were not fully independent states. Normally, the Dominion would retain the Monarchy and the Pound Sterling. Defence and other areas would be by agreement with London, based on the long historical connections between all the Dominions and England.
All the Dominions used their self-governing status as a basis for seeking full international recognition. They all obtained recognition. When recognised, not all the former Dominions became full members of the British Commonwealth. Many did, others did not and others have their own tailored relationship with England their former rulers.

The First Dominion campaign is an organisation which will campaign to seek Dominion Status for Wales, by peaceful, democratic and legal means. First Dominion will ask Welsh voters to vote in favour of setting up a All-Wales Constitutional Convention. This All-Wales-Convention will have a valid democratic mandate. We will seek Dominion Status for Wales the First Dominion.
Self-government as a Dominion will revive confidence, energy and enormous advances for Wales.
